Co-presented by Wills and Estates Accredited Specialist Clare Sunderland of our office, this workshop is hosted by the Law Institute of Victoria as part of Law Week.

Planning ahead can help you stay in control of important decisions, even if there comes a time when you are unable to make them yourself. This free, one hour online webinar will provide you with a clear and easy to understand introduction to substitute decision making in Victoria.

Designed for older people, families and carers, the session will explain who can make decisions for you if needed, how you can choose the right person, and how arrangements can be put in place before they are needed. No legal knowledge is required.

The event will be held online on Thursday 21 May 2026 from 1-2pm.

The event has been developed by members of the Law Institute of Victoria’s Elder Law and Succession Law Committees as part of the statewide program coordinated by the Victoria Law Foundation, which aims to help Victorians better understand their legal rights and responsibilities.

The webinar will provide a high-level overview of key substitute decision-making arrangements, including:

  • Enduring Powers of Attorney
  • Medical Treatment Decision Makers
  • Guardians and Administrators
  • Aged care restrictive practices substitute decision-makers

Members of the LIV Elder Law and Succession Law Committees will explain the types of decisions these decision-makers can assist with, including financial, personal, medical, and aged care matters. The session will also introduce other important legal documents, such as Advance Care Directives, which enable individuals to record their values, preferences, and instructions for future medical treatment.

Whether you are planning for yourself or supporting someone you care for, this webinar aims to help you feel informed, confident and in control. There will be time for general questions at the end.
